Stable isotopes provide evidence of a trophic shift in the lesser spotted dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula from the Central Tyrrhenian Sea

چکیده

Stable isotopes (?13C and ?15N) were analysed in vertebrae of Scyliorhinus canicula (n=40; 13 males, 27 females) from the central Tyrrhenian Sea to explore a potential trophic shift relation sex maturity condition. Isotopic values obtained centre periphery vertebra each individual test for effect The ?13C ?15N showed significant differences between immature mature state individuals (U’=1392, P<0.0001 ?13C; U’=1385, ?15N). Differences demonstrated during maturation progress S. canicula. peripheral vertebral part, corresponding individual, higher (mean 5.41‰ SD±1.29‰), compared with lower 2.78‰ SD±1.52‰) observed part related state. The Lesser-spotted Dogfish (scyliorhinus Canicula): Parasites and Scavenger Habits

The occurrence of parasites in the digestive tract of the lesser-spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) caught in the north western Mediterranean was analysed and the results compared with infestation levels in samples of the same species caught in the Atlantic (off the south west coast of Ireland). The relationships between parasite levels and the scavenger habits of the lesser-spotted dogfis...

Single nephron function of the lesser spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula, and the effects of adrenaline.

Function of the kidney and the nephron in the lesser spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula, was investigated by clearance, renal tubular micropuncture and ferrocyanide infusion techniques. 70% of the glomerular filtrate was reabsorbed within the renal tubule, producing slightly hypotonic urine. Glomeruli were: perfused and filtering (F); arterially perfused but not filtering (NF); or non-arter...

Metal accumulation and metallothionein induction in the spotted dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula.

Recent studies indicate that elasmobranch fish respond differently to metal exposure than marine teleosts. Accumulation rates can be high, which despite the fact that normal background levels for metals in the marine environment are low, is worrying due to the long life span and late fecundity of most shark. The goals of the present study were to examine differences in accumulation rates and to...

Responses to moving visual stimuli in pretectal neurons of the small-spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula).

Single-unit recordings were performed from a retinorecipient pretectal area (corpus geniculatum laterale) in Scyliorhinus canicula. The function and homology of this nucleus has not been clarified so far. During visual stimulation with a random dot pattern, 45 (35%) neurons were found to be direction selective, 10 (8%) were axis selective (best neuronal responses to rotations in both directions...
